கிராமத்தில் கூட்டறவு பால் வழங்கும் சங்கம்னு இருக்கும். அந்தந்த பகுதியில கறந்த பால எடுத்துகிட்டு வந்து ஒரு இடத்தில் அளந்து ஊற்றுவார்கள். இன்னாருடையது இவ்வளவு லிட்டர் என குறிப்பெடுத்துக்கொண்வார்கள்.அதை கேன்களில் ஏற்றி ஒன்றாக ஒரு இடத்தில் சேர்ப்பார்கள். பிறகு நாற்பது லிட்டர் கேன்களில் ஊற்றி வைப்பார்கள். அதில் ஐந்து லிட்டர் பால் எடுத்துவிட்டு, மனச்சாட்சி இருந்தால் மூன்று லிட்டர் பால் எடுத்துவிட்டு, அதற்கு பதிலாக தண்ணீரை ஊற்றுவார்கள். ஐநூறு கிராம், அல்லது முன்னூறு கிராம் சர்க்கரையை போட்டு கலக்கிவிட்டால் போதும். லேக்டா மீட்டரில் கண்டுபிடிக்க முடியாது.
அப்புறம் அந்த பால் கேன்களை எல்லாம் லாரியில் ஏற்றிச் செல்வார்கள். அதிலுள்ள கிளீனர், டிரைவர் சாமார்த்தியத்திற்கு ஏற்ப கை வைத்துவிட்டு பதிலுக்கு கொஞ்சம் தண்ணீர்.இப்படியாக அந்த பகுதியில் உள்ள பால் குளிரூட்டும் நிலையத்திற்கு போய் சேரும்.
அங்க பெரிய தொட்டியில கேன் கேனா எடுத்து கவிழ்ப்பார்கள். கொழுப்பை பிரித்தெடுத்து பதப்படுத்தப்பட்ட பாலா மாற்றுவதற்காக நீண்ட சில்வர் குழாய்களில் ஓடியபடியே இருக்கும். அப்படி நூறு கேன்களை எடுத்து கவிழ்த்தால் நான்காயிரம் லிட்டர் பால்…கூடவே அனாமுத்தா ஒரு ஐந்து கேன்கள் தண்ணீர் எடுத்து ஊற்றுவார்கள். பால் அப்படி இப்படியுமாக கீழே சிந்தி சேதாரமாகுமில்ல. அதை ஈடுகட்டவாம். லட்சக்கணக்கான லிட்டர் பால் என்றால் எவ்வளவு தண்ணீர்….?
இப்படி குளிரூட்டி, கொழுப்பு நீக்கிய பால் பெரிய பெரிய லாரிகளில் ஏற்றி சென்னை போன்ற பெரு நகரங்களுக்கு அனுப்புகிறார்கள்.அப்படி வரும்போது வழியில் பக்குவமாக சீல் உடைத்து ஆயிரம் இரண்டாயிரம்னு எடுத்துவிடுவார்கள். அங்கேயும் தண்ணீர் கலப்படம்.
ஒரு வழியாக அந்த வாகனம் நகரங்களில் உள்ள பால் பண்யைகளுக்கு வரும். அங்கு பதப்படுத்தி தரப்படுத்தும் வேலை. அங்கேயும் ஏராளமான பால் கீழே சிந்திகிக்கிடக்கும். ஆக இங்கேயும் ஈடுகட்டுவதற்கென்று தண்ணீர் கலப்பு.? அதோடு நின்றுவிடவில்லை. இன்னும் இருக்கிறது. மனதை தைரியப்படுத்திக்கொள்ளுங்கள்.
பிறகு அங்கிருந்து அந்தந்த பகுதிகளில் உள்ள பால் வினியோக நிலையத்திற்கு லாரிகளில் கொண்டு வந்து அங்குள்ள டேங்கரில் நிரப்பிவிட்டுச் செல்வார்கள். அங்கே சில்லரையில் விற்பதற்காக இருக்கும் ஆட்கள், அவர்களின் பங்கிற்கு இரண்டு குடமோ, மூன்று குடமோ தண்ணீர் கலந்துவிடுவார்கள். அவர்களின் செலவுக்கு வேண்டுமில்லையா..அதற்காக கலப்பார்கள். நம்ப ஆட்கள் அட்டை வாங்கி வைத்துக்கொண்டு, ‘ஆவின் பால்தான் பெஸ்ட்’ என்று குளிரிலும் மழையிலும் வரிசையில் நின்று வாங்குவார்களேஇ அந்த பாலின் கதை இதுதான். இப்படித்தான்..

90 pc of packaged drinking water companies in State not BIS certified

Product must meet 140 parameters before ‘ISI’ stamp is given

Of the over 4,000 manufacturers of packaged drinking water in the State, only 415 have the all important ‘ISI’ stamp certifying that the product is fit for consumption. In cities like Bangalore, where a big chunk of residents remain off the pipe water grid and depend on packaged water, this revelation by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) becomes particularly significant.

All packaged water – whether in bottles, canisters or packets – has to meet 104 requirements before being certified by the BIS with an ‘ISI’ stamp. Samples have to clear tests for several types of pesticides, microbiological contamination, heavy metals and other chemicals.

While it is illegal for any packaged drinking water manufacturer to operate without a BIS certification, “most manufacturers have not applied for a licence,” said A.K. Bhatnagar, head of BIS, Bangalore branch. So large is the packaged water industry in the State (located mostly in and around the city) that monitoring these manufacturers has become “the main focus” of the national standards body, Mr. Bhatnagar said at a press conference on Friday.

Packaged water is among 95 types of products for which a BIS certification for quality and safety is compulsory. The other products that require mandatory BIS certification include baby food, electrical home appliances, automobile parts, medical appliances and gas cylinders, none of which cannot be stored or sold without a BIS licence.

Another group of products require only ‘voluntary testing’, such as gold jewellery.

In 2001, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare enforced quality control for packaged drinking water and natural mineral water, bringing them under Prevention of Food Adulteration Act, and under the Compulsory Certification Scheme.

The lack of consumer awareness about drinking water certification makes matters tougher for the Bureau to track down illegal entities, said Mr. Bhatnagar.

Also, while BIS is authorised to monitor and certify products, it cannot enforce the law, he said, adding that they have, however, referred several cases of unlicenced manufacturers to the regulatory body, Food Safety and Standards Authority of India. Water manufacturing companies have also been booked for using the ISI stamp without a licence, he said.

BIS, in 1987, took over the functions of Indian Standards Institution (ISI) in implementing national standards for various consumer goods. The ‘certification mark’, however, remains ‘ISI’.

Real-time quality check in tea soon

KOLKATA: In the wake of the recent pesticide debate raised by a Greenpeace study, the Centre is planning to empower tea producers especially small tea growers (STG) with a new three-tier, real-time and web-based quality checking-cum-standardisation system which would help Indian tea industry maintain the global health food parameters of tea leaves and made-tea, said Rajni Ranjan Rashmi, additional secretary, Union ministry of commerce.

On the sidelines of the 131st annual general meeting (AGM) of Indian Tea Association (ITA) in Kolkata on Friday, Rashmi told TOI that the government would unveil two more laboratories in the eastern region in addition to its existing three Tea Research Association (TRA) labs in Kolkata, Guwahati and Siliguri. He asked the industry to bring in a greater element of transparency in the current e-auction process and a systemic change.

However, the additional Union commerce secretary has denied that this upcoming initiative has anything to do with the Greenpeace report claiming that the Indian tea contains some pesticides beyond permissible limit. He clarified that this new system is in a conceptual stage now and a natural progression to a process initiated by the Centre in March with a notification to the tea producers to maintain the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSI) norms.

The tree-tier system will consist of separate places for collection, process and analysis of tea leave samples. "This would mainly help small tea growers — who form over 30% of the Indian tea industry — produce quality tea. The STGs can then access the lab-test system through the small tea growers directorate. We need to give them a support system like this to upgrade quality and trace chemicals," added Rashmi.

According to him, a four-pronged strategy like in-depth study on mechanization, optimum handling of labour cost (which 60% of total expenditure), fresh investment and productive research on which both the government and the industry would have to work hand in hand. "As almost 80% of the existing research in the tea sector is carried out by TRA, industry has to pitch in with more research initiatives to handle effects of weather anomalies, drought and subsequent pest attacks to stabilize the quality," Rashmi said.

Speaking as the chief guest of the AGM, state finance, commerce and industries minister Amit Mitra reiterated that the sector must benchmark its practices and improve productivity. "The state government is extremely serious about tea. Tell me, what kind of assistance is needed from the government. We must brainstorm to aggressively compete with global giants in tea like China. An e-auction centre and a dry port in Siliguri is what the government can come up with to help the sector at the moment," said Mitra.

Outgoing ITA chairman A N Singh said, "Poor infrastructure in terms of power and road communication and non-availability of coal is becoming a major stumbling block in improving the competitiveness. Assam has been the most hit with around 23 million kg of YoY crop loss owing to the erratic rainfall in the past nine months. Darjeeling tea, whose prices are down by around Rs 75 per kg, are affected by unchecked infiltration of Nepal tea these days." Singh proposed for a pan-world e-auction facility for Darjeeling tea. He also welcomed A K Bhargava as the new chairman of ITA.

Tea Board chairman Siddharth, who was also present at the AGM, urged the industry to embrace all new sustainable tea production initiatives like Plant Protection Code (PPC) and TrusTea. "We cannot ignore them now. As the industry is not keeping pace with the demand, Indian tea has to strengthen its brand value by complying with all standards. If not, more questions will be raised," he said.

Welcoming new testing concept, Bijoy Gopal Chakraborty, president of the small tea growers body Cista, told TOI: "As an integral part of the industry, we are responsible enough to meet the health standard. We, too, want to produce eco-friendly, healthier tea. We first need time and understanding on these issues like plant protection code or the three-tier testing system."

Milk adulterator caught

NAGPUR: Acting on a tip off from a consumer activist Mohammad Shahid Sharif, a team of food wing of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) led by assistant commissioner NR Wakode raided the residence of Gyaneshwar Paunikar in Adarash Vinkar Colony in Tandapeth and caught him red handed adulterating milk of various local as well as national brands. FDA has filed a complaint against the accused under section 26 of Food Safety Act 2006 and IPC sections 272 and 273. The process of lodging an FIR has also been initiated.

The team, besides Wakode, consisted of food safety officers AS Mahajan and AD Raut. They found packets of pasteurized, homogenized and toned milk of brands like Amul, Dinshaw and Haldiram. He had been opening these packets, removing milk, filling them with water with the help of a group of his associates. The team seized 39 litres of milk costing Rs912.

Sharif, who runs an anti-adulteration society, had been keeping a watch on Paunikar for some time and had informed the FDA about it. He told TOI that the accused used a special machine to cut open the packets. He used packets discarded from the tea stalls to refill them for selling them back in the market.

350 children hospitalised for food poisoning, discharged later

Around 350 children of a government-run Urdu Primary School here were hospitalised today for suspected food poisoning after partaking mid-day meal.

The children with complaints of head ache, stomach ache and vomitting were taken to Dr Ambedkar Medical College Hospital with anxious parents swarming the premises, making it tough for police to control them.

Speaking to reporters, Health Minister U T Khader, who visited the hospital, said "around 350 students have fallen ill and have been admitted to Ambedkar Hospital. Most of them have returned home after getting the treatment."

The children were brought to the hospital at around 3.30 pm with complaints of vomiting sensation, Anjaneya, Manager, Ananda Social and Educational Trust which runs the hospital, said. He saiddoctors were told that a lizard was found in the food served to the children.

A school teacher said she found a lizard in the food soon after which they stopped serving it.

"All the 350 children who were brought for treatment have been discharged," D J Halli Police said late in the evening.

The Akshaya Patra Foundation, which supplies food to schools, in a statement said the food cooked by Akshaya Patra is into mass cooking and the same batch has been distributed to neighbouring schools as well. "No complaints have been registered. The food samples are sent to laboratory for the mandatory check-ups."

It said Akshaya Patra kitchens are ISO 22000 certified and follows a strict hygiene adherence while cooking. "All the kitchens of Akshaya Patra follow a standard process for preparing the mid-day meals. This process is charted out to ensure hygiene and quality of the cooked meal and also to adhere to the food safety standards."

Raid on tapioca chips making unit in Erode

A Food Safety Department team raided an unauthorised tapioca chips manufacturing unit at Mullamparappu in the district on Thursday.

Official sources said that the company had used packaging material that bore an address in Coimbatore.

In the first place, the manufacturer had no sanction to produce the chips. And, the manufacturer had used a brand name illegally, said G. Karunanidhi, District Officer for Food Safety and Drug Administration. 

The raiding team found the oil used for making the chips to be substandard. The confiscated items were worth about Rs. 80,000, he said.

Threat to poison water in overhead tanks

Following a letter threatening to mix poison in the water stored in overhead tanks in 4th ward in Kondappanaickenpatti, the tanks were cleaned, here on Friday.

Letter

T. Anuradha, District Designated Officer, Tamil Nadu Food Safety and Drug Administration Department had received a letter on Thursday that bore the sender’s name as Mohammed Rafiq.

The letter said that a group of people were involved in arms training during night time in Jeeva Nagar area and they had killed 19 community dogs that disturbed them.

The letter said that if she interferes in their issue, she would be beheaded.

The letter also warned of mixing poison in water tanks in the above area.

She forwarded the letter to Collector K. Maharabushanam who instructed the Block Development Officer to take up the issue with the Panchayat president R.P. Babu.

Later he lodged a complaint with the Kannankurichi police who registered a case and are investigating

கலெக்டரிடம் புகார்

தனக்கு வந்த கடிதத்தின் மீது தக்க நடவடிக்கை எடுக்க வேண்டி, உணவு பாதுகாப்பு நியமன அலுவலர் டாக்டர் அனுராதா மாவட்ட கலெக்டர் மகரபூஷணத்திற்கு அனுப்பினார். அவர் உடனடியாக சம்பந்தப்பட்ட போலீஸ் நிலையத்தில் புகார் தெரிவிக்கவும், கொண்டப்பநாயக்கன்பட்டி பஞ்சாயத்து தலைவர் பாபுக்கும், வட்டார வளர்ச்சி அலுவலருக்கும் தெரிவிக்க உத்தரவிட்டார். மேலும் கிராம நிர்வாக அலுவலர் பாலம்மாளுக்கும் தகவல் தெரிவிக்கப்பட்டது.
