Consumers ask FDA to be vigilant

NAGPUR: A delegation of AkhilBharatiyaGrahakPanchayat, Vidarbha branch, met the joint commissioner of Food and Drugs Administration (FDA-food) S G Annapure and demanded action against fruit sellers using carbide for artificial ripening of fruits and adulteration in milk.
Annapure has assured the panchayat members about continuous monitoring not just for these two but all the food stuff including oil and dairy items. "Keeping a watch on fruit sellers and milk and dairy products is a part of our daily monitoring. We continuously raid outlets of wholesalers as well as retailers. But we do respect the request of the panchayat and will maintain a watch on them," he said.
Gajanan Pande told TOI there were lots of complaints about adulteration of milk using urea. So the organization decided it to bring it to the notice of FDA. Ripening of fruits like mango, banana and mousambi using carbide was also common. FDA has the power to fine up to Rs5 lakh for substandard items and Rs2 lakh for adulterated foods. In fact, a fine as high as Rs10 lakh could also be levied on those engaging in any kind of false and unauthorized advertising.
Annapure pointed out that the department had recently fined Rs1.80 lakh and destroyed 10,000 litres of milk. Small food vendors, especially those selling Pani Puri, have also been fined time and gain. Gutka sellers have always been on the radar of FDA. FDA has seized gutka worth Rs72 lakh. Under the new Food Safety and Standards Act the department has collected a fine of Rs12.5 lakh, he informed.

23 students fall ill after mid-day meal in Usgao

Students from Usgao school admitted in the sub-district hospital.
PONDA/PANAJI: Twenty three students including four girls from St Joseph’s High School in Usgao were admitted to the sub-district hospital on Friday afternoon on fears of food poisoning after they complained of pain in stomach after consuming a mid-day meal.
The students were from Classes V and VII, including one boy from Class III.
Hospital sources said that the students were observed for about six hours and later 22 students were discharged while the Class III boy, aged nine, has been kept under observation. Doctors said that the students mostly complained of gripping pain in stomach but did not show any symptoms of food poisoning like vomiting or loose motions.
The Class III student said that they were served bhaji pao as part of the mid-day meal during the recess. However, around noon, he along with other students started experiencing gripping pain in the stomach and they alerted their teachers, who shifted the students to the sub-district hospital.
Based on a complaint from the manager of the school Fr Felix Lobo, the police have registered a case under sections 272, 336, 337 r/w 34 of the Indian Penal Code, sections 50, 51, 56, 57 and 58 of the Goa food standard and safety act, 2006 and section 87(f) of the Goa public health act against the two self-help groups (SHGs), which were supplying the mid-day meals to the school.
The police further said that officials from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) visited the school and collected food samples, which have been sent for testing. Based on the reports, further police action will be initiated against the two SHGs, police said.
Meanwhile, the director of FDA Salim Veljee said that samples of the balance leftover food items like bhaji, pulao and pao have been sent to the laboratory at Bambolim for testing. He further said that the reports could be ready by Wednesday or Thursday as the samples require microbiological analysis to check and test them for bacterial contamination.
Incidentally on July 13, 2013, both the SHGs supplying mid-day meals to the above-mentioned school were inspected by FDA officers and no major sanitation lapses were detected.
FDA officials sealing food samples in the school premises as the deputy superintendent of police, Ponda Dinraj Govekar looks on.
However, after the news of suspected food poisoning case broke out, FDA officials again visited the SHGs and also the bakery from where the bread was supplied. The second inspection revealed that there were no major lapses in case of one of the suppliers, Kapilleshwari SHG, while in the case of the other supplier, Shivbaba SHG, the raw material was found to be stored on bare floor at its premises and vegetables were being cut on the floor and not kept in aluminium trays for which they were served a notice.

TASMAC to be under food safety norms

Bars attached to Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (TASMAC) outlets across the State are soon likely to come under the ambit of norms laid down by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).
The new move to bring the bars under FSSAI norms is aimed at ensuring quality food is served to customers.
Already there are complaints that several bars are allegedly serving dishes of low quality. Besides, packaged drinking water, non-alcoholic beverages and snacks are sold at exorbitant rates in many bars.
Sources said that the national body was planning to enforce its regulations in these bars from February 4, next year.
Meanwhile officials of FSSAI here said that the organisation would send intimation about the new move and ask contractors of bars attached to TASMAC outlets to comply with its norms.
Sources added that new tenders to run bars attached to the State-run liquor outlets were likely to be floated in October this year.
“The FSSAI has been trying to bring bars attached to TASMAC outlets under its norms for a long time. Officials are planning to bring bars under FSSAI purview when licenses for contractors are renewed in October,” an official said.
Most TASMAC outlets in the state are having attached bars that are run by contractors.
As per FFSAI norms, every food business operator (FBO) in the country, who has an annual turnover
of more than Rs12 lakh, should get a license to run the business.
FBOs that have an annual turnover below Rs12 lakh will have to register with the body and follow the norms laid down by FSSAI.
Several FBOs, who operate bars along with hotels, have already applied for license, sources added.
